Please come to our meetings or contact us with any questions or ideas.
Sustainability can be broadly defined as the ability to provide for the needs of the world's current population without damaging the ability of future generations to provide for themselves. When a process is sustainable, it can be carried out over and over without negative environmental effects or impossibly high costs to anyone involved. The dimensions of sustainability are economic, ecological, social and cultural, and include the environment as well as development.
Examples include:
- Spending/investing locally - locally owned businesses vs. chains
- Walking, biking, mass transit vs. individual transport vehicle
- Supporting locally grown food
- Developing & sustaining integrated land-use patterns that strengthen bonds among and between residents, businesses and organizations.
Sustainable Worthington gratefully acknowledges ongoing inspiration and help from Simply Living
(www.simplyliving.org). Simply Living's vision is to create
a compassionate and sustainable world through personal, community and cultural transformation.
Sustainable Worthington was inspired by the October 2006 Simply Living
conference "Do It Here! Do It Now!"
Our first meeting was held on November 29, 2006.
